Being residents of Bromley, we are all familiar with the infamous Biggin Hill air shows. Our borough, Kent is probably best known for these iconic displays; however there is recent news that the continuation of these annual air shows may be terminated. Biggin Hill is known as a famous fighter station; in fact this very station was a crucial ‘ally’ to Britain during the 2nd World War. Furthermore, the air shows have provided popular entertainment to the public with a good mix of historic aircrafts and modern military jets being included in the air shows. Consequently over the years the air shows have built up a reputation for providing an excitement packed day out for the general public and aviation enthusiasts alike making it one of the most popular annual events in Kent. The question remains, why then is the Biggin Hill air show being terminated?

Well, it all began in 1994 when the air field was sold by the Borough of Bromley to a private owner. The owner, Biggin Hill Airport Ltd. (part of Regional Airports Ltd.), agreed to the continuation of the Biggin Hill air show license however, there are now rumours that the owner has terminated it. A statement made by ADI states that the termination was, “on the somewhat technical grounds that the Maitland family shareholding in ADI no longer conforms with the terms of the licence”. The Biggin Hill air show has been a major asset for Kent for seventy years; the ending of the air shows will not only destroy countless decades of culture and tradition but cut down on the already limited amount of public, family friendly events in Kent. With youth spiralling out of control can we afford to lose this asset? It’s our call.
