On the 7th of November Bromley High School hosted an extraordinary event- the economics conference.
The high profile conference organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs and Bromley High School. Sixth form students from Skinners, Farringtons, Hayes and Tonbridge Grammar School and more got a unique opportunity to discuss major economic problems with great lecturers. The conference consisted of three lectures on topics chosen in light of their forthcomig AS and A2 levels examinations. Students were addressed by eminent university lecturers.
At first Dr. Steve Davies led a discussion on global economic development, it turned out that the topic was much more complex and less obvious than we might think, students were suprised that before 19th centure something like development in countries economies did not exist! The next lecture was led by Professor Jonathan Wadsworth who introduced students to the topic of immigration in the United Kingdom and its effects on countries economy. Students participated enthusiastically in team discussions and presented their points . Eventually professors point was made and many miths concerning immigration and UK were definitelly dispelled. After lunch break came the time for last lecture by Dr. Kristian Niemitz who considered poverty and anti-poverty solutions.
Both students and their teachers seemed to be very content with the conference. They said that it was a great exerience which taught them much more than ordinary lessons, it helped them to get more into the real world of economics and its problems. It was also a great inspiration to study more and become the ones who help to solve those issues.„Things like that should happen much more often” says James , one of the AS students who participated in the conferece.
The goal of the organizers is reached, maby those inspred motivated students would lead their path to become economists.
