Remember, remember the fifth of November! And what better way to do so, than to enjoy the spectacle of these blazing beams lighting up the night at the Highway Primary School in Orpington?
In 1605, Guy Fawkes and a band of Catholic conspirators set out to destroy King James VI of Scotland and I of England and the ruling elite, on the day set for the king to open Parliament. Guy Fawkes was one of a small group of Catholics who felt that the government was treating Roman Catholics unfairly.
The story is remembered each 5th November when 'Guys' are burned in a celebration known as "Bonfire Night". And this year, on the 5th November 2014, the local neighbourhood celebrated the day with a wonderful firework display at a local primary school in Orpington; The Highway Primary School.
It was certainly a successful event, as many from the Highway community flocked to see the fireworks glowing in the night. Undoubtedly, an occasion that brought the whole community together, many people from Chelsfield and Orpington arrived at the school, filling the space as they gathered to see the luminous flames glimmer, for all to see.
It is a substantial understatement to say that the display was just ‘interesting’, as judging from the delighted faces of adults and children alike who came to enjoy the spectacle, the fireworks display was a big hit! The shining sparkles, gleaming and flaunting, were spectacular!
“Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason, why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.”
