Mayor of Bexley visits Bexleyheath Academy to attend a poetry competition for years 4 & 5 from a range of Primary schools in the borough. With two runner ups and 2 winners (couldn’t choose just one), the children had the room filled with tears as we commemorated the Soldiers on Remembrance Day. On the 12th November, Mayor of Bexley and his wife came to celebrate Remembrance Day with the children of primary school from around Bexley at Bexleyheath academy. All 12 students were entered into a poetry competition by their teachers to be judged by the Mayor and the librarian of BA. Only two could win (with a few runners up) but each poem brought all kinds of emotion to every heart in the room that day and should all be very proud.

Two children from Bursted Wood Primary School came joint first; both year 6 pupils. ‘I remember’ by Thirushiha Thirubavanathan had a poem that we could all relate to. It repeats “I remember my granddad told me…” a line that touched and almost pulled at the heart strings of us all. ‘An innocent boy’ by Joel Hopkins also brought everyone to tears as it gives us an insight of a young boy having to fight in the war and to finish with the line “An innocent boy to more” caught us all by surprise.

I did not get a chance to talk to the Mayor but as he said to everyone that day, all these children who participated have great potential in future life when they become young adults and further on. Each poem was full of passion and pure talent, a skill proud to be shown.
