Competitor of both 2008 and 2012 Olympics, Ellen Gandy returns to Beckenham for an evening to catch up with Beckenham Swimming Club.
On the evening of Monday 22nd September Ellen returned to Beckenham swimming clubs home pool, The Spa at Beckenham to interact with the swimmers and speak of her experiences whilst competing in the London 2012 Olympics. Some were fortunate enough to have a question and answer session with Ellen. Typical questions included: what are the foods she eats on the day of a race, how she managed both swimming and school work and comical questions such as whether she met and fancied Tom Daley!
Ellen Gandy is an Olympic Butterfly swimmer who competed in both 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. More recently she competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games where she swam in the 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly, making the 100m butterfly final.
Ellen began her love for swimming as a member of Beckenham Swimming Club, where she progressed up the squads to the Top National Club, achieving National Swimming times in multiple events along the way, before moving to Australia at the age of 17 to concentrate on swimming as a profession.
After the event I was speaking to one of the swimmers who said:
“I felt very lucky to be able to hear about the Olympics from a swimmers personal experience. It was obvious how proud all the coaches and swimmers were of how much she has achieved in her swimming career. She is an inspiration to everybody at Beckenham Swimming Club and everyone felt very fortunate to be able to spend the evening talking to her”.
