BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The important and eventful month of October is coming to a conclusion.

Canterbury's diverse and rich cultural population has been celebrated yet again, through a variety of events and activities, surrounding a theme, this year, of 'Reclaiming Narratives'.

'Reclaiming Narratives' is about taking stories back into the hands of the people who lived through them, telling the story from a different point of view, of which may have been forgotten, or hidden throughout history.

Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) and the University of Kent have supplied helpful recognitions, such as: Black History Month webinars to the theme of 'Reclaiming Narratives,' campaigns such as 'Expect Respect,' and much more.

However, it is important to regard these issues consistently, as the month comes to an end.

Black History Month shouldn't be viewed as a temporary remembrance, we, as a people, should incorporate this idea of 'Reclaiming Narratives' into our lives, fully.

HOW CAN I INCORPORATE 'RECLAIMING NARRATIVES' INTO MY MINDSET?

There are many ways to celebrate Black History every day - here are a few examples:

Ensure your school/workplace is reflective and aware of racism and ways to prevent prejudice and discriminatory action taking place - to raise inclusivity and to take a stand.

Be an ally to the Black community - support events that focus on black excellence - to reflect, learn and listen.

Use your voice - Speak up, use social media and share with others to promote visibility of Black contributors, artists and authors.

CONCLUSION

As this month concludes, think back on the prominent and significant impacts Black people have had on our world and history in the past, present and future.

'Reclaiming Narratives' is about telling your side of the story, the unheard side, the forgotten side, and to never repeat the mistakes of our past.

It's time to take a stand and reclaim your narrative.
