In a time when the world is becoming more polarized each day, one generation stands out as the loudest and perhaps most educated on social issues: Gen Z.

Armed with the power of social media, Gen Z is rewriting the rules on activism, boldly taking on political issues that previous generations have shied away from.

Statistics show that 70% of Gen Z believe that social media is a highly effective tool for spreading awareness. Thanks to media platforms, like Instagram, TikTok, and X, they have access to an endless flow of news sources, debates, and discussions that inform their worldviews in ways older generations couldn’t even imagine.

This generation has demonstrated they’re not afraid to use their voices, amplified by social media’s global reach, to advocate for change. Protests and movements that once took months to organize now reach the masses in seconds, and Gen Z is quick to act.

In Canterbury alone, we have seen this passionate activism first-hand in recent years, with local people turning out in force to rally against climate change, stand in solidarity for Palestine, and fight against racial injustice.

The actions of prominent figures like Greta Thunberg have certainly inspired them. Her courage in speaking out about her views has spurred countless young people into action.

But it’s not just global figures driving this change; local students are equally committed. “We see issues online and we want to change them,” says Habeeba, a student from Canterbury.

“We know we can make a difference, and we won’t stay silent.”

For Gen Z, activism is not just a trend but a genuine expression of their values. They are changing systems, demanding transparency, and calling for a world built on respect and righteousness.

With them leading the charge, there’s real hope for a world where justice, equality, and compassion drive the decisions that shape our society. These young voices have already made a powerful impact, and it is clear they’ll keep pushing forward.

Gen Z has shown us they’ll fight for a brighter future – one where the issues of racism, inequality, and injustice can finally be resolved.

And, who knows? With a generation this passionate, change might just be closer than we think.
