In a world where we can so easily be dragged down by feelings of stress and anxiety, we all need something to turn to as an outlet.

With millions of scientific studies showing the benefits of regular exercise, and the wide opportunities for social connection as well as personal achievement, sports can be the perfect escape that is often overlooked.

When asked about the benefits of playing sport, many would say the main gain comes through physical health and fitness, as engaging in regular exercise through sport is a great way to stay fit.

Whilst this is true, the mental health aspects of sport are often not spoken about enough, with specific impacts on young people.

Not only is playing sports an amazing way to stay active and have fun, but it has so many more benefits that you would never even think of.

Being physically active has shown strong links to decreased symptoms of anxiety, with specific studies recognising exercise as a treatment for depression, favourable in some cases to antidepressants.

Exercise is also one of the most effective, and enjoyable, ways for your brain to produce ‘feel good’ hormones called endorphins, both enhancing your mood and diminishing your body's perception of pain.

A 2021 study involving 70,000 Canadian high school students found proof of participation in sports linking directly to improved mental health, sleep and self confidence.

For many young athletes, team sports offer substantial social, mental and physical rewards. It’s not just about fitness; they also provide a unique opportunity to forge new friendships, whilst also honing communication and leadership skills that are key for success in future life.

With ever growing opportunities for participation in team sports -regardless of gender- now is as good a time as ever to take up a new sport: it's truly never too late!

The feeling of progression and finding a passion for a new sport or activity is unlike any other and being part of a team provides a sense of community and belonging, improving confidence and self-image.
