Overall, it was a day to remember – even if it was full of chaotic Disney characters making their way through the thick mud – and it will go down in history as Simon Langton Girls’ most treacherous sponsored walk…

Every year, all students in Simon Langton Girls Grammar School take part in a fifteen-kilometre sponsored walk, in fancy dress, for charity.

The theme for dressing up this year was Disney.

The letter that went out to parents in July describes the walk as a way for your child to ‘raise sponsorship in a safe way’.

Although this has been true for many years, the weather on Friday the 27th of September was not exactly ideal.

The walk takes place through already muddy fields and farms, so with the bonus of several days of rain prior to the walk including on the day, you can imagine how the students felt when faced with 15km of slipping and sliding in the cold and damp, whilst also dressed as their favourite Disney princesses.

Inevitably, the walk was cut short, and pupils were told to turn around, meaning that whoever was at the front of the group, was now at the back.

There were some mixed opinions about this event, some were grateful for the turn, and some were quite disappointed.

“I was really enjoying the sponsored walk, but eventually I was happy about the turn around because the mud was too much.” said Maggie, a sixth form student who has done many sponsored walks with the school before.

“What a joke.” said Inca, a year ten student in the school, who was dressed as princess Tiana “it really paid off for those people who walked slow, because they go back first.”

The school was a mud bath, and shoes and various muddy items were scattered around the outside and even inside the main entrance.

On the plus side, Simon Langton girls have managed to raise roughly £10,500 that will be split between the school and the school’s nominated charities for 2024/2025.
