JULY has seen a variety of riding from Gravesend Cycling Club members in the Pyrenees, time-trials, sportifs and Ironman.
Veteran Mike Harrington certainly hit the heights when he went down to the Pyrenees and rode some of the high mountains featured in this year’s Tour de France.
It paid off because he came back and broke through the 30 minute barrier for the 10-mile time trial, a target he has been plugging away at since he joined last season.
Adrian Dennison rode the 54-mile Reigate sportif in 3hr19m to gain a silver, only narrowly missing out on the gold.
GCC’s hardman, Ironman Steve Hunter, competed in the Outlaw Ironman in Nottingham, placing 249th out of 1,000 entrants and 24th in his age category.
He completed the 2.4-mile swim in 1hr08m, the 112-mile cycle ride in 5hr50m and the marathon (26.2 mile) run in 4hr48m, but by this time was suffering from an injured foot which slowed him down.
It makes you tired just thinking about his total 11hr46m effort.
For those of us who like a shorter and quicker effort, the club 10-mile time trials on the Grain course continue.
Jason Tibbs is leading the way with some excellent rides.
In the first event he recorded 23.31, Luke Harrington 26.24, Keith Ward 28.04, Dave Barclay (returning after a long absence) 29.31 and Mike Harrington.
Times in the second race were: J Tibbs 23.33, G Terry 24.38, Richard Bettaney 25.02, L Harrington 26.34, Steve Harrington 27.46, K Ward 28.35, M Harrington 29.58 and D Barclay 30.55.
In the Ramsay Cup 25-mile race J Tibbs was again fastest with 1hr00m30s, followed by Graham Terry 1hr03m32s, Andy Gibson 1hr04m21s, S Harrington 1hr08m37s and L Harrington 1hr10m46s.
J Tibbs and S Harrington were section winners.
