PAUL Field and Andy Thomson of Blackheath and Greenwich (B&G) Bowls Club lost in the quarter-final of the Waitrose EBA National Championships to Greg Sampson and Graham Ashby from Warwickshire side Avenue BC, going down 17-22.
After an impressive start the B&G pairing led 9-2 but the Warwickshire side fought back to 9-12 down.
They then hit the accelerator winning six consecutive ends which included a fourand a five taking a commanding 22-12 lead.
Despite four shots on the 20th end and killing the 21st end, Field and Thomson could not overhaul their opponents.
In the first round B&G rallied from 6-16 down to beat Wiltshire 20-17 and followed this with two outstanding performances beating Sussex 25-7 then Durham 21-10.
B&G lost the final of the Ron Ault Trophy 26-44 to West Wickham.
West Wickham held a slender one shot lead at five ends which they increased to 13 by the 10th.
B&G cut this to six on the 15th helped by a count of seven on Rod Meekum's rink.
But they fell away at the end losing by 18 shots.
Ron Smith, Tom Shorter and Tom Smyth won the Bromley Centenery plate 15-14 to a combined Hayes/Forest Hill triple.
