A SPORTS club celebrating its 100th birthday have lined up a day of fun and frolics to mark the magnificent milestone, writes Jonica Love.

Catford Wanderers will blow out the candles on their birthday cake on September 9.

There will be an afternoon of sports including rounders as well as exhibition matches of cricket, badminton and tennis.

Throughout the day at the club on Beckenham Hill Road, near Beckenham Hill station, there will be a BBQ and steel band.

There will also be an evening meal and disco costing £20 and starting at 8pm.

Catford Wanderers began life in 1906 as a cricket team playing at Ladywell recreation ground.

From there they moved five times before eventually settling at Symons Meadow in Southend Lane in 1920 - thus earning their Wanderers name.

Throughout the 1920s considerable improvements were carried out giving the club three hard and eight grass tennis courts, two football pitches and one badminton court.

The club survived both World Wars, and in the Second it was used as a barrage balloon site by the RAF.

The club can boast some memorable members such as Michele Tyler who represented Great Britain in tennis and had victories over Pam Shriver and Bille Jean King.

Looking on to the next century the club hopes to improve playing standards and build covered sports facilities for indoor tennis and the expansion of the badminton court.

The club is also waiting for planning permission from the Lawn Tennis Association for floodlighting of winter games.
