Cambridge Harriers Joe Durrant was one of the stars at a quality evening of athletics at a packed Sutcliffe Park, Eltham, as the Sydney Wodderson Memorial 800m was held in the BMC and Club Open meeting.

Andrew Osagie of Harlow AC came away with all £400 of the prize money in the third running of the prestigious Sydney Wooderson 800m Memorial Challenge.

The race is held in memory of Blackheath’s Olympian, who broke the world record for the 800 meters in 1938 with a time of 1:48.4.

The prize money of £150 for first place and an additional £250 for the fastest finisher who can beat Wooderson world record time attracts a quality field of runners from across the country and this year from Wales, Ireland and Iceland too.

Osagie led the race for most of the way to finish in a time of 1 minute, 47.80 seconds. However, running on his home track, Joe Durrant stormed in to second place with 50 metres to go and had the kick to be the only other runner on the night to duck under Wodderson’s old world record in a personal best time of 1:48.37 in front of his home crowd.
