NORTHBROOK Kyu Shin Kai Judo Club will receive the highly-coveted Clubmark silver award from the British Judo Association’s chairman Densign White this autumn.
The club, who formed in 1992, train at Bromley, Lewisham and Downham, as they continue to hold an ever-increasing presence within the region.
Northbrook has become London’s inaugural Clubmark silver outfit, as well as becoming the first club in England to gain the award while training across three venues.
The Clubmark scheme was created by Sport England in 2002 in partnership with national governing bodies.
Clubs work through the scheme from bronze award up to gold after demonstrating that they are committed to providing a safe, effective and friendly environment for players.
White, a former standout player and bronze medallist at the 1987 world championships, will take both the junior and senior classes, as well as presenting the club with their award.
The 48-year-old is one of the most popular and sought after figures in the sport, having excelled in the playing arena as a three-time Olympian before becoming a BJA director when he retired in 1992.
Northbrook’s development has been assisted by Tim Edwards, the British Judo Association’s London development officer, who lauded the efforts of the club’s committee.
He said: “Northbrook Kyu Shin Kai is the first club in London to have achieved the silver Clubmark accreditation with the BJA.
“This shows the continued determination and effort the committee puts into its club.
“The club’s committee is very forward thinking and has great aspirations for the club to continue its development for many years.
“This achievement is a continued sign of the way in which judo is evolving within the capital.”
The presentation evening will take place on October 6 at Carey Scutt Scout Hall, Plaistow Lane.
