The last competitive match of the South London & Kent Pool Alliance for Summer 2010 saw the Fox Under The Hill defeat Erith Snooker Master 8’ers in a last frame decider in the Tier 2 play off to gain re-entry into the Elite League for 2011.
A match where both teams relied on defence rather than attack, it was Erith Snooker that took the early advantage and their 4-1 first set lead looked to put them in command, with good performances from Paul Williams, Paul Clark and Dave Faulkes.
Allan Formosa kept alive the Fox’s hopes with help from Simon Evans as they rallied to close the gap to 6-4 by the end of the second set, before Formosa struck again, showing typical Maltese tenacity to narrow the deficit to one.
Kevin Hewitt put Erith Snooker within touching distance of the Play Off trophy, and now the Fox needed all three frames to avoid defeat.
As the tension rose, so too did the mistakes as players struggled to put frames away.
Sudden Death champion Chris Gaunt and a nice finish from Evans brought the match to a climax and a last frame finale.
Clark looked in control as the Fox’s Richard Merricks, attempted to battle back from an awkward position.
A desperately unlucky in off foul from Clark presented Merricks with two visits, and he duly cleared to promote Fox Under The Hill, collect the trophy and £75 prize money.
