FARNBOROUGH Tennis Club held their annual finals day on Saturday.

The ladies’ singles final was contested between Shirley Wicks and Maureen Gankerseer.

This was a close two-setter with Wicks winning the tie-break in the second set and the match 6-2, 7-6.

In the men’s doubles, David Keegan, who was appearing in his first club final, partnered Nigel Holmes against Simon McVeigh and David’s father, Brian Keegan.

Although there were plenty of long rallies and games, McVeigh and Brian proved too steady for their opponents and took the match in two sets 6-3, 6-3.

Father and son were also facing each other in the mixed doubles where David was partnered by Rosemary Protheroe and Brian by Helen Morris.

Protheroe and David won the first set comfortably but when Morris and Brian went 4-0 up in the second, it looked as if we were in for a third set.

However, Protheroe and David had proved in earlier rounds that they can come from behind and set about doing so again, eventually winning the second set and the match 6-3, 7-5.

Both the ladies’ doubles and men’s singles were played earlier in the week and each produced a marathon finish.

Protheroe partnered Muriel Shapley in the ladies’ final against Gankerseer and Jan Whitehead.

After a long three-setter lasting more than two hours, Protheroe and Shapley emerged as were the winners 7-5, 0-6, 6-4.

The men’s singles final saw McVeigh and Brian competing against each other in an even longer three-setter.

Both players were feeling pretty tired after many long rallies and games, when in the middle of a level third set, Brian played a lucky winning lob into the back right corner and McVeigh sportingly said it was the shot of the match.

Brian, whose will was fading fast, was so encouraged by these words he made one last effort and managed to close out the set to win 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
