WEST Wickham stunned Blackheath & Greenwich winning 3-2 in the Bowls England national top club competition.
Wickham's Tony Bartholomew got off to a good start beating Pat Putnam 15-12 in the two wood singles.
At this early stage they led in all disciplines.
B&G took the lead in the fours and triples but James King and Andy Thomson trailed Malcolm Whitehead and Phil Broomfield in the pairs.
Wickham's Ian Way led Jeff King in the singles.
Thomson fought back to 20-21 with an end to play, but scored two vital shots by winning 21-20 to tie the match.
Minutes later, B&G’s Neil Hornsbys’ triple beat Geoff Bailey putting the home side 2-1 up.
Way continued to lead the singles but King fought back eventually losing 21-14, which tied the match two all.
Attention turned to the fours.
West Wickham retook the lead then let it slip and the scores were tied 14 all on the 19th end. They then scored three shots, leaving B&G needing four to win. The pressure told and in very scattered head West Wickham skip Bill Mewis was four down with the last bowl to play.
Calmly sending his bowl off drawing third shot to win 17-16 and the match.
B&G bounced back from the morning's defeat to beat Eltham in the league 4-1.
In The Bowls England over-55 pairs, Pat Putnam and Ted Wyeth made a remarkable comeback against Met Police duo Tony Bishop and Ron Robinson. With three ends left the B&G pair were 11 shots down but scored 5-5-1 to edge the match 22-21.
