GREENWICH swordsman Jonathan Webb won a silver medal at the British youth fencing championships.
The 14-year-old Kemnal Technology College student qualified for the Sheffield event after becoming the south east of England champion in February.
Forty two of Britain’s top U14 fencers competed at the championships and after the first round, Webb’s scores ranked him in 12th overall, a placing good enough to secure entry into the direct eliminator stages.
Webb won his next four fights and coasted through to the semi-final where he came up against the number one seed, Ruben Amsalem.
Amsalem appeared to be on his way to victory and required only one point to secure it after opening up a 14-11 lead.
However, the Greenwich ace fought back in style to seal a 15-14 victory and set up a final date with Cornwall’s William Deary.
After trailing 10-2 in the final, Webb’s strength and character showed through and he pulled the score back to 13-11.
Unfortunately he left it too late and eventually lost 15-12, adding the silver medal to his growing list of achievements.
Webb has represented the GB team on three different occasions in two different aged groups and is well on track to achieving is ultimate goal of representing GB at the 2016 Olympics.
