Parkrun, the nationally acclaimed free, weekly, timed 5k running event for all ages, has recently launched a new event in Greenwich.
Greenwich Parkrun is held every Saturday at 9am in Avery Hill Park. There have been nine runs since the inaugural run on 6 March 2010 and over 90 runners have so far taken part in this fun event.
Open to all ages and abilities, runners register once on the Parkrun website and are then able to take part in Parkrun events around the UK.
Each runners gets their own section on a website where their results and statistics can be displayed, with the adition of weekly photos and reports.
There is also a social element to Parkrun, with runners retiring to the park café to catch-up and have some well deserved refreshments.
Each run is organised by a dedicated local group of volunteers. It is the hard work of the volunteers and the event sponsors, Nike, Lucozade Sport, Sweatshop and London Marathon, which ensure that the event remains free of charge for the runner.
So far the run has been well supported by local clubs, especially Cambridge Harriers whose member Gavin Hows, broke the course record last week. Harriers 13 year old Heather Butcher also leads the way for the fastest time in her age group.
Everybody is welcome. For more information, visit the parkrun website: www.parkrun.com and the Greenwich event site at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/greenwich
