Camberley 0 v 15 Blackheath

BLACKHEATH Women's Rugby Club travelled to top of the table rivals Camberley for a match which had all the potential to be very close.

With both sides known for their powerful forward play and competitive back lines the stage was set although the weather had other ideas.

As the scheduled kick-off time of 2pm neared the rain and wind added to an already damp ground and created a surface which would at best last for only the first half before deteriorating.

Blackheath tactics sought to exploit both conditions and opponents and a frenetic first 20 minutes saw the The Club dominating in the forwards with an aggressive and well-drilled rucking and mauling game.

Line outs soon became an away side weapon with Emily Longmore taking opposition ball as well as safe collection of Blackheath line out throws.

With changes in the front and back row, spectators witnessed some ferocious tackling from Helena Train and Claire Revell, with Genny Bissett providing pace and causing problems from open side flanker.

Despite the difficult conditions the backs rounded off two team plays with tries from winger Gina Iaqueillo and full back Elaine Jaxon.

Skilful handling and strong running were highlights of the back play in the first half before the defensive action in the second sought to keep out Camberley's slow muddy walk towards the Blackheath lines.

Scum-half and fly-half, Janet Livesey and Becky Carlton, renewed their halfback partnership following injury and exploited space and positional weakness to good effect.

Captain Livesey continues to lead from the front with sniping runs and relentless tackling giving the opposition no time to relax.

As Blackheath continues to improve they look like a side worthy of promotion.
