TWO boxing clubs have come away from the ABA Golden Belt national finals in Everton with three winners.
From Bexley Amateur Boxing Club, based at the North Cray Community Centre, Bedens Road, Sidcup, Joe McCulley (above, right) and Bert Truby (left) won their finals with comfortable points decisions.
James Hewlett, also 14, from Danson Amateur Boxing Club, Brampton Road, Bexleyheath, was the other victor, again on points, after three rounds.
Joe, 14, won the 34 kilos category by 22-7 and coach John Gristey said: "He took control of the bout from the first round to the last and won with brilliant technical boxing."
In the 36 kilos category Bert, 14, beat his Leeds-based opponent 21-9. John said: "The other lad was an elusive boxer but Bert made good use of the ring cutting his opponent off and scoring with good combinations."
He added: "This is a brilliant achievement by both boys who have had success because they pay attention and listen to the coaches."
James, 14, won his 63-66 kilo bout by 15-7. Coach Paul Chapman said: "James' opponent chased after him but he used good footwork and every time the boy came at him he caught him with two or three good shots.
"James is really fit and he worked hard for all three rounds picking his punches to take the win."
