THE London Street Warriors inline skater hockey club have re-written the record books by winning their fourth consecutive national title.
Based in Eltham and Kidbrooke the club had to win a three-team group before victories in the quarter and semi-finals put them up against Sheffield-based Hallamshire Hornets.
Never before has one club been so dominate in the sport and it is the icing on the cake for the club who celebrate their 25th birthday this year.
It was the senior team which won the national final but the club also has a pee-wee under-12s team and a youth section, both of who have also had a successful season.
The sport is similar to ice hockey but played using a ball rather than a puck and on wheels rather than on ice but it shares the same rules.
The finals were held in Torbay, Devon, over a weekend and the Warriors, coached by Great Britain international Glenn Jordan, beat Oxford and London-based team the Sri Lankan Staring Frogs in the group before a nail-biting quarter-final against Kingston Street Flyers which they eventually won 5-4.
A victory in the semi-final by the same score line over Cardiff meant the Warriors had the chance to make history.
It was a tough final as the Hornets won their domestic league without dropping any points and had eased through the national title group conceding only two points and scoring 10.
It was the Sheffield team which started the brightest taking a quick two-goal lead and Jordan called a time out to settle his team's early nerves.
From the restart they looked a different team and very soon they opened their account and the first quarter ended 21.
By the end of the second quarter the scores were level at 3-3 with everything to play for but the third and fourth quarters were all about the Warriors.
Their constant movement and accurate passing was a lesson in how to play the game and it was clear there would be only one winner.
A further five goals condemned Hornets to an 8-5 defeat and the Warriors lifted the trophy to put their names into the record books.
A club spokesman said: "The result was a massive endorsement of how inspired coaching, passion and belief can carry the day against the most formidable opposition the country can offer.
"A huge thank you to Glenn and the boys for a spectacularly-entertaining weekend of excellent street hockey.
"It seems churlish to single out any individual player for this was truly a superhuman team performance which won't easily be forgotten by any of the guys."
The club, with member from Lewisham, Bexley and north Kent are looking to increase membership at all levels so if you are interested and want details on how to join, visit streetwarriors.co.uk Warriors: Prosper Edutie; Tom Halsey; Barry James; Billy Lambert; Wes Lee; Carlos Rodriques; Adam Shirley; James Tanner; Mick Tanner; Dan White.
