CHARLTON Park continued their winning start to 2010 in the league with a win over mid-table Horsham by scoring six well-worked tries.
Carrying on from their performance from the previous week, Charlton started the game brightly and had the opportunity, in the opening exchanges, to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty.
But unfortunately, the extremely wet conditions played a factor in the footing of the kicker and the ball drifted wide of the posts.
The opening try of the match was the result of a piece of skill from fly half Ben Chappell which saw him chip the ball over the advancing Horsham defence, regain possession and pass to Michael Casizzi, who finished off the move by scoring the try.
Sam Naden, having learnt from his previous missed kick, added the conversion.
With Charlton controlling possession and running well, further tries looked likely at any time.
A storming run by No 8 forward Rob Saunderson saw him breaking tackles on the way before being tackled just short of the try line.
Good ball retention and recycling of the ball by Charlton’s forwards enabled scrum half Ben Bevan make a quick dart over the line to score the second try.
During the previous match between the two earlier in the season, Horsham’s fly half exhibited his kick skill and he recreated his form with a successful long range penalty kick from just inside the Charlton 10m line to post the visitors’ first points of the day.
Winger Neil Smith caught a high ball and built up a head of steam before proceeding to break up the centre of the field.
When he was tackled his pass found Saunderson backing up and following a deft chip from the forward, the ball bounced up into Jon Bourke’s arms and he accepted the chance with great delight to score the try.
With Naden adding his second conversion and a penalty kick, Charlton ended the half with a comfortable lead.
The second half saw Charlton continuing to play some fine handling rugby, although Horsham’s share of possession began to increase.
However, they were inclined to kick unsuccessfully for position, thereby allowing Charlton to run the ball at most opportunities.
Charlton’s next two tries were the result of good play by forwards, the first scored by Saunderson and the second by Casizzi.
With Naden adding the conversions Charlton stretched their lead to 28 points.
Despite having to play on the back foot for long periods, Horsham still gave glimpses of their attacking potential.
Charlton were reduced to 14 men when they had a player yellowed carded after the referee mistook two total different haircuts, and sin binned the wrong man.
The home side’s last try was scored by Hugh Simpson when he drove over to score to complete a fine display for the hosts.
It was in the closing minutes of the match Horsham scored the best try of the game when their right wing ran the length of the pitch to score the visitors’ second and the fly half added the conversion.
