KIDBROOKE schoolgirl Sabine Efiannayi completed a great medals double for Greenwich by winning silver in the shot at the English schools athletics championships in Sheffield.
Sabine, 16, one of eight young ambassadors promoting Olympic values among young people in Greenwich, then went on to finish second for England in an international competition in Belfast.
She said: “I’m very happy with my success. I only took up the shot in March last year but I have a very good coach in John Hillier at Sutcliffe Park.
“Now I hope to compete in the UK schools’ event in Cardiff in September.”
Kidbrooke School headteacher Trisha Jaffe said: “Sabine is a rare talent. Until Year 10 she had never picked up a shot.
“In this short space of time she has gone on to second place in the English schools championships.
She is also as modest as she is talented and I know she will take this success in her stride.”
Councillor Jackie Smith, Greenwich Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “I’m very proud of Sabine’s achievements and the example she sets for young people in Greenwich.
“As we approach the Olympics in 2012, encouraging young people to participate in sports and physical activities is increasingly important, so to ensure we maximise the opportunities the Games will bring to Greenwich.
“Sabrine is a credit to Kidbrooke School, an excellent role model to her peers and has an ambition that goes hand-in-hand with Greenwich’s - to achieve excellence in the Olympics.”
