A PAIR of new club members enjoyed victory in the recent Farnborough TC tennis finals.
Louise Gankerseer beat Shirley Wicks in the ladies’ singles contest, while fellow new arrival Chris Ponulak overcame the challenge of Brian Keegan to secure the men’s crown.
The ladies’ doubles was a very close encounter, with Gankerseer teaming up with Elvira Beecham to finally get the better of Muriel Shapley and Pat McMenemy in three toughly-fought sets.
Keegan partnered Nigel Gerlack in the men’s doubles against David Bye and Simon McVeigh.
Each of the players lost their service games early on before the opening set went to a tie-break, which was eventually won by Keegan and Gerlack.
This came as a welcome boost to the duo and they went on to claim the second set and the title.
Ponulak and Keegan were back in action in the mixed doubles, partnering Jane Wells and Maureen Gankerseer respectively.
The first set was nip and tuck until the ninth game when Maureen and Keegan managed to break service and hold in the next game to take the set.
This seemed to unsettle their opponents and they went on to lose the second set.
Bye and Keegan fought out the men’s veterans singles final and it was Keegan who eventually made the most of his experience by defeating his rival.
