BROMLEY picked up a bronze medal at last weekend’s London Youth Games.

Youngsters from the borough claimed first place in seven events – tennis, girls’ swimming, male hockey, female athletics, female disability football, trampolining and diving – at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace.

The success of Joshua Bourke, Mari Takino and Elizabeth Ashworth in the tennis delighted coach Laurie Bourke.

He said: “We came third last year, so we’ve made good progress to win the tournament this year. “The team was loyal, committed and determined. I’m really proud of them all.”

Athletics coach Mick Jones said: “The team showed great team spirit and performed really well. They deserve their gold medal finish.”

There was also success in the pool for the borough’s swimmers, with the juniors and seniors combining to claim gold.

Lauren Walton (freestyle, medley relay), Katie Davis (backstroke, freestyle relay, medley relay), Heather Travers (breaststroke, medley relay), Rebecca Walton (butterfly, freestlye relay, medley relay) and Emily Davison (freestyle relay, medley relay) made up the junior team.

The senior squad were Steph Denny (freestyle), Rachel Bull (backstroke), Felicity Hamilton-Cox (breaststroke) and Steffi King (butterfly).

Langley Park School provided the entire team for the victorious male hockey squad.

They were Daniel Rhodes, Matt Green, Sam Percival, Peter Sampson, Nathan Hill, Andy Tromp, Tom Gregory, George Pettitt, Harvey Young and Harry Taylor.

Manager Marc Hardy said: “The boys really deserve their success.

“They trained hard and played good hockey and I’m very happy for them.”
