A NEW Eltham man has been named as a member of the British wheelchair rugby team strongly fancied for a medal at the Beijing Paralympics after winning the European championship.
Andy Barrow, 28, was a player at Wanstead RUFC when he sustained a serious injury 10 years ago.
He has since been supported by the Rugby Union charity Spire with equipment, support and advice which not only enabled him to maintain an independent lifestyle, but also have a future in sport.
Fellow team member Ross Morrison explained: "Before I was injured, I would never have been an international athlete or gone to the Paralympics.
"Through the support of Spire Rugby Trust to help me in my life and sport, I have achieved so much more than I could have dreamed.
"I can't thank Spire enough for all the help and support over the years."
Spire was able to provide specialist rugby wheelchairs and assistance for Andy's girlfriend and mum to travel with him to Beijing.
He is determined to encourage others who find themselves in a similar position and travels the country giving motivational and inspirational support to demonstrate there can still be a very bright future after serious injury.
Tim Bonnet, general secretary of Spire, said the dedication, determination and optimism of Andrew and the rest of the team inspires everyone they come into contact with.
