Joe Choong believes he is in a promising position going into the weekend after impressing in the modern pentathlon fencing round.
Choong, from Bromley, collected 22 victories and 13 defeats to amass 222 points and rank eighth overall.
The competition’s next event is swimming (August 20) and Choong goes into the round full of confidence.
The 21-year-old former Whitgift School pupil said: “I am in good stead for Saturday.
“It will definitely give me confidence because if I look at my results beforehand I have not fenced this well, as long as my planning goes well I will definitely be close to the medals.
“I am loving it in Rio, I am smiling like a little child.”
Despite being content with his own performance, Choong could not hide his disappointment for Team GB teammate Jamie Cooke, who currently ranks 28th.
Choong, who is now based in Bath, said: “I am disappointed for Jamie obviously.
“We hang out all of the time, we live next to each other so you want each other to do well.
“But at the end of the day when you are competing you have to focus on yourself and don’t really watch where anyone else is.”
