Joe Choong is not setting himself any targets for Rio 2016 – but the 21-year-old believes a strong performance could lead to a medal.
Choong, who will compete in the modern pentathlon, achieved a career best finish in a world cup event in April as he finished fourth in Rome.
The Orpington-born prospect was only five seconds behind claiming a bronze medal and hopes to take that form into the Olympic Games.
However, Choong simply wants to perform to the best of his best ability and see where that takes him.
He said: “I don’t want to put a number on it. I performed well at Rome despite not being perfect on the day so I just want to do as well as I can.
“Even if I come last but I’ve got close to a PB in my swim, ride and fencing, I’d still be happy.
“But then again, if I perform like that I would like to hope that I’ll be near the top.”
Choong admits his performance in Rome provided him with a timely confidence boost ahead of the summer’s pinnacle event.
“That was really only the second senior competition where I’ve been up there near the medals, apart from the Europeans in Bath last year,” Choong added.
“Just knowing that I can compete with these guys is very good for confidence going into future events.”
