Former West Indian batsman Kirk Edwards hailed one of the best innings Lashings has ever seen after the All-Stars were comprehensively beaten by Leigh Academy at Bexley Cricket Club on Friday.
The 30-year-old belligerent batsman made three centuries in 33 matches for the Windies, witnessing countless fantastic innings during his career from the likes of Chris Gayle and Kevin Pietersen.
But Edwards admitted it has been a while since he has seen such a powerful display of hitting as Bexley was treated to by Sam Heazlett.
The Australian overseas player, 19, who plays for Bexley, smashed a 38-ball ton before celebrating his 150 to guide Leigh past Lashings’ total of 268 with seven overs remaining.
“That was pretty special,” Edwards said.
“Sam batted absolutely brilliantly – he’s clearly a great player with a lot of talent.
“That’s one of the best innings I’ve seen played against us.
“I would love to see him go on and become a professional cricketer and, who knows, perhaps play for Australia one day.”
Despite ultimately cruising to victory, Leigh faced a daunting chase after Kiwi Tim McIntosh scored a hundred and Edwards smashed 50 to propel the legends to 268 from their allotted 30 overs.
And even though Lashings lost the match, Edwards insisted the day had been a huge success.
He said: “It’s great fun to see all the different grounds and see the locals.
“The atmosphere is always amazing.
“It was nice to score some runs, I try to entertain the crowds as best I can.”
Heazlett also commented on a match he will surely never forget.
“I just went out trying to have some fun and it came off,” the Brisbane batsman said.
“That’s probably the best I’ve ever felt batting and it was a huge honour to play in the game.”
