Eltham Terrace Rovers are riding high at the top of the South London & Kent Pool Alliance Tier Two West, going thirteen points clear and remain unbeaten after this week’s victory over Lord Clyde.
Rovers won the first two sets 4-1 and it looked as though the third set was going the same way as Darren Porter won his personal battle with Martin Luff 3-0 and Rob Hearn also scored three out of three to put them 2-0 up.
However John Hurd and Billy Russell both won their second out of three frames to tie the set and Peter Barber took the final frame to give Lord Clyde the set, only the third Rovers have lost all season, making the final score 2-1 and 10-5.
Eltham Terrace Rack Pack had to concede more ground to Rovers as they also had to concede their match against O’Dowds A, after failing to amass enough players to play the match.
This gave Pickwick Academicals a chance to take second place, which they did but only just after losing to Royal Oak Addicks, 2-1 and 10-5.
Colin Smith was the inspiration behind Addicks victory by winning all three of his frames.
This win took them to within a point of the two teams above them, meanwhile the point Academicals scored put them equal on points with Rack Pack but they go above them, having won one more game.
There were some crazy results in Tier Two East, none more so than bottom team Glenmore Arms II beating third placed Eltham Terrace Nuthouse by 2 sets to 1 and 8 frames to 7.
It looked like the match was going to form , as Nuthouse won the first set 4-1 but Glenmore hit back, winning the first three frames of the second set to make the score 1-1 and 4-4, before Nuthouse regained the frame advantage by taking the last two frames in the set.
In the final set Glenmore reversed the score from the first set to give them the shock victory.
Shane Burnett won his two frames for the victors, with Ben McIntosh and Dave Sparey doing the same for Nuthouse.
Despite the win, Glenmore stay bottom as White Hart produced their own shock win, 2-1 and 8-7 over Bellegrove Social Club B to take them to within two points of their opponenets.
There was a tough game at the top of the table, as Glenmore Arms A in second played the league leaders, O’Dowds Flyers, who just edged it 2-1 and 9-6 to go six points clear at the top.
Alex Dobbins was man of the match for Flyers, winning all three of his frames and he was backed up by Jon Syta and Connor Hewson who won two frames each.
The SLKPA decided to give teams the week off last week to watch England in the World Cup but players from the Elite League’s Pickwick and Bellegrove appeared to have more wisdom, as they played a match, albeit on Wednesday instead of Thursday and Bellegrove would have wished they didn’t as they lost 2-1 and 8-7.
The first two sets were shared and Bellegrove were 7-5 up overall but Pickwick came back to tie the match at 7-7, with Martin Storey winning the final frame, his third of the night, to give Pickwick the win.
After beating the second placed team last week, Pickwick couldn’t keep up the form against the third placed team, Eltham Terrace Club A, going down 3-0 and 9-6.
Steve Pearce was in great form, winning all three of his frames for Eltham Terrace, to put them four points behind Bellegrove in second, with a game in hand.
Despite playing two matches, Pickwick have lost fourth spot, after Rileys Rebels had a big win against North Heath Social Club by 3 sets to 0 and 11 frames to 4.
Rebels won the first two sets 4-1, the final set 3-2 and never looked like losing as Alex Biggs, Dayle Stork and Louis Wilbourne all won both their frames to put them a point ahead of Pickwick.
Bellegrove recovered from last week’s loss with their own huge victory, 3-0 and 12-3 over Foots Cray Social Club Rugrats.
Tony Halpin, Richard Chapman and Craig Mallinder won three frames each to leave Bellegrove only five points behind league leaders O’Connors
Top played bottom, as O’Connors went to Royal Oak and the match went to form as the top team won 3-0 and 10-5.
O’Connors didn’t have it all their own way though as the first and last sets were only won by the odd frame, 3-2, with Paul Clements winning two out of two for the Oak, although O’Connors were dominant in the second set, taking it 4-1 to remain unbeaten for the season.
