RUGBY LEAGUE: The Year 10 girls’ rugby league team from Leigh Academy in Dartford are making history yet again.

Twelve months ago they became the first girls’ team from the south to win a national title in rugby league’s champion schools competition.

And they have managed to repeat the feat by booking a place in the final against Castleford Academy at Richmond on August 22.

But they’re not content with just getting to the final, they want to win again and have enlisted the help of the capital’s Super League club to help them do just that.

This week four members of the London Broncos’ first team (Nesi Mataitonga, Atelea Vea, Denny Solomona and Mike McMeeken) visited the school to put the girls through their paces.

Leigh Academy director of sport Matteo Stamato invited the Broncos quartet and was pleased with how nthe session went.

He said: “It was a fantastic session, a really good inspiration for the girls and myself.”

“They’ve learned a lot and the Broncos showed how simple the game could be and what they can learn.

“These guys really do know their stuff, the girls absolutely loved it.”

CRICKET: Bexley Cricket Club’s young ladies began their league campaign with a win in the new KCB T20 competition for developing female teams when they visited Hayes CC on Sunday.

Batting first Bexley got off to a slow start but upped the run rate in the second half of the innings to record 100-4 in their allotted 20 overs.

Hayes responded with some aggressive batting but were losing wickets to a Bexley bowling attack in which everyone impressed.

Bexley eventually bowled Hayes out for 77 in 16 overs to achieve a 23-run victory.

MARTIAL ARTS: Warrior Fight Series held its first mixed martial arts event at White Oaks in Swanley on Saturday.

The show was headlined by local fighter Mike ‘The Nightmare’ Neun who took on fellow ranked UK light heavyweight Lloyd Clarkson.

The bout was meant to crown the inaugural WFS light heavyweight champion, but due to Neun missing the weight he was unable to win the belt.

He won through via unanimous decision and it has only fuelled the fire in his belly all the more.

Neun said: “Fighting on WFS was a good experience all the staff tried extremely hard to make it the best show they could.

“The fight was the hardest of my career physically and I had to dig deep to get through it.

“He had a concrete head and the more I beat him, the harder he seemed to become.

“I sort of stuck to a gameplan but I cut weight too hard and I was struggling with my cardio as a result.”

He added: “I could have done a lot of things different but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

“As for not winning the title, I'm pretty gutted.

“I worked so hard for that fight, I wish it was different but I just couldn't get the weight off.

“That’s the first and last time I will ever miss weight.

“I like my food too much but that's changing and it's because I should have that title around my waist right now.”
