Week two of the South London & Kent Pool Alliance Summer season saw a rerun of last season’s Founders Cup final where Rileys Woolwich played Pickwick and with differing fortunes last week it was an important match for both sides.
After their defeat last week and in the cup final it was Pickwick who got revenge by winning 2-1 in sets and 10-5 in frames although Rileys were gracious in their defeat saying Pickwick deserved their win with a number of difficult clearances.
If it wasn’t for Tony Halpin the score may have been worse as he won all three of his frames, including a break and dish to make it six out of six for the season so far.
Also unbeaten for the season is Pickwick captain Paul Slater who backed up his two wins last week with three this week and matched Halpin with a break and dish as well.
He was helped by Martin Storey who also secured three victories and Paul Gafa who won two of his three frames.
Pickwick’s conquerers last week, O’Connors kept up their early season form with a 3-0 and 12-3 victory over Glenmore Arms A to go top of the table.
There was no early birthday shenanigans for Adam Coppen as he won all three of his frames and he was joined by Jordan O’Connor and Tony Gear, who made it three out of three for the second week running.
Glenmore’s Ian Cruwys came out with some credit as he won both of his frames and the only other winner on the night for Glenmore was Alex Thompson.
Bellegrove Social Club A continued their run of victories over newly promoted teams with a 2-1 and 9-6 win over Rileys Rovers.
The first two sets were shared with the same 3-2 scoreline and Rovers won the first frame of the final set but Bellegrove won the final four frames including a break and dish from captain Ron Brown to secure the set and the match.
Rovers Darren Porter had a personal battle with Dan Henink, Porter won the first two frames which included a break and dish but Henink produced an excellent clearance in the final set to get one back on his opponent.
Rovers frames were shared equally between Porter, Ryan Francis and debutant Graham Pointer, each winning two out of three but Stephen Pearce and Shane Hutley both went one better for Bellegrove by winning all three of their frames.
In the SLKPA Tier Two West all the matches were won by the same 3-0 set score although fortunes differed slightly with the overall frame scores.
Rileys Rebels kept up their 100% win record with a 3-0 and 10-5 victory over Pickwick Academicals.
Declan Kelly continued his fine form from last week by winning all three of his frames again and he was joined this week by Louis Wilbourne.
Both players were on fire as Kelly cleared the table after a foul break from Ash Hall and Wilbourne ‘7-balled’ Gary Mason in the final frame of the night.
Antigallican proved that Rileys Unstoppables were far from unstoppable as they were just too strong in the 3-0 and 10-5 victory.
Sean Lightbown won all three of his frames as did Grant Bedford who held his nerve to win two set deciders with Michael Kent backing them up with two victories out of his three frames.
After their fine win last week Kings Arms were brought back down to earth by Beech Tree Nuthouse after they came away with a 3-0 and 9-6 win.
The Nuthouse won each set 3-2 with Dave Sparey winning in each set, Julie Lancaster was also unbeaten with a victory in her only frame and Shane O’Reilly helped towards the win with two out of three frame wins.
After his two out of two last week Kings Arms’ Clive Forrest went one better this week with three out of three to help make the score more respectable.
Royal Oak are looking to get out of Tier Two East at the first attempt after their second straight 3-0 in sets victory, this week over Glenmore Arms II.
This was a pretty convincing win as John Kinsville, Paul Clements and Steven Heather all kept up their 100% records for the season with two frame wins each in the 12-3 in frames triumph.
Also convincing in their victory was North Heath Social Club who thrashed new boys White Hart 3 sets to 0 and 13 frames to 2 with Dave Selby, Ian Stringer and Brett Crawley all winning all three of their frames.
After their losing draw last week New Eltham Social Club have reversed it this week with a winning draw as they beat Bellegrove Social Club B 2-1 in sets but lost 9-6 in frames giving both teams two points.
This is an even more creditable win for New Eltham as they only had four players and managed to win the first two sets 3-2 before falling apart in the final set going down 5-0 to let Bellegrove back in the match.
