COMPLETING their pre-season campaign on a warm Leatherhead afternoon, Welling United eased to victory courtesy of a fine Joe Healy goal.
Still missing Kiernan Hughes-Mason, on international duty, Welling United were also without Ben Martin however every other squad member was available for Jamie Day.
Ex-Wings Jamie Coyle and Adam Gross started for the Tanners.
There was an early drawback when Day was injured and had to be withdrawn and replaced by Jake Gallagher.
Harry Baker fired over and following up on Clarke’s blocked shot, Gallaher saw his shot saved by Matt Read.
Ross Lafayette’s cross was headed over by Clarke before Sam Mott, in the Welling goal, was called into action for the first time saving from Tom Bradbrook.
After Baker had again made space for a shot that he failed to keep down a crude challenge by Bentley Graham on Healy drew a reaction that resulted in both players being lectured by the referee.
Graham was not picked up from a short corner and crossed for Bradbrook who evaded his marker to enable him to glance a header that Mott caught comfortably.
Luis Cumbers then did well to send Gallagher away but Read made an excellent save to maintain parity.
Baker then collected another loose ball but shot wide before his pass was brought down superbly by Healy, who then spun and shot into the top corner with an effort that may have flicked Lafayette giving Welling the lead.
Four further changes at half time gave the Wings a different look for the second period.
Bradbrook fired straight into the Welling wall before Theo Fairweather-Johnson almost took advantage of some clumsy Leatherhead defending.
Kev Terry shot high and wide for Leatherhead before Jack Obersteller’s corner was headed wide by Fraser Franks.
Gallagher saw his shot tipped over by Read and from the Obersteller corner that followed, Scott Kinch failed to finish having lost his marker.
Malachi Hudson caught out Jerry Nnamani but Fairweather-Johnson was unable to convert his opportunity.
Clarke and Fairweather-Johnson had late chances as Welling searched for a late second in vain.
Next Saturday the Wings commence their league campaign with a tough home fixture against relegated Bath City.
Welling United: Mott (Turner), Fazakerley (Joe Obersteller), Jack Obersteller, Day (Gallagher), Franks, Acheampong, Healy (Kinch), Clarke, Cumbers (Hudson), Main (Lafayette), Baker (Fairweather-Johnson).
