PLAYING their third away game in five days, Welling United’s pre-season campaign continued with a fine performance at Faversham Town.
Victories at Cray Valley PM (6-0) and VCD Athletic (3-0) were followed by another good win as Jamie Day’s team prepared for another tilt at promotion.
Early chances were few and far between as both teams struggled to come to terms with a pitch that had been difficult to tend over three weeks of poor weather.
Jamie Turner made a regulation save from a long shot by ex-Wing Adrian Stone but had to be replaced soon after by Sam Mott.
After Jon Main had seen an effort saved, Kiernan Hughes-Mason created a chance for himself but saw his shot turned away for a corner.
Main shot wide after good work by Danny McGuire before Welling scored on the stroke of half time.
Loui Fazakerley crossed to Main who pulled the ball back and although Luis Cumbers was unable to turn the ball back, Scott Kinch followed up to finish emphatically.
Immediately after the re-start, Welling doubled their lead.
Substitute Ross Lafayette crossed and Hughes-Mason’s shot flew in off the angle of crossbar and post.
Ryan Flack then cut in but shot just wide before setting up the third goal when a perfectly weighted through invited Lafayette to lob the oncoming keeper which he executed to perfection.
Mott conceded his first goal in Welling colours when a near post corner was turned in but he made a superb save from a penalty minutes later after Fraser Franks had been adjudged to have handled.
Welling then went back on the attack and won a corner from which they restored their three goal advantage.
Jack Obersteller’s delivery found Franks who netted with a spectacular volley.
Flack then set Harry Baker free down the wing but when hecut in his shot was saved comfortably.
Lafayette had a shot saved at the near post but there were no further clear cut opportunitied before the referee brought the game to an end.
