WELLING United continued their pre-season campaign with a 3-0 victory at VCD Athletic last night.

Having been frustrated by postponements due to bad weather, VCD Athletic were delighted to be able to host Welling and both teams enjoyed a fine workout.

Two days after their 6-0 wind at Cray Valley (PM), Welling drew first blood in just the third minute when Harry Baker’s cross took a wicked deflection which gave Bradley McNamara, deputising for Jack Bradshaw, no chance.

Baker came close to doubling the visitors’ lead soon after when firing over from a half cleared corner but the Wings were almost caught out when a slip up allowed trialist David Noel a run on goal.

Sam Mott in the Welling goal had other ideas, though, and made a fine double save before Loui Fazakerley tidied up.

Anthony Acheampong played a perfect through ball for Jamie Day to round McNamara only to see his effort blocked on the line before Kiernon Hughes-Mason fired over from Baker’s cross.

Another flowing move saw Luis Cumbers thwarted by an acrobatic McNamara save before Welling doubled their lead.

Gavin McGuire, who ran the show from midfield before being replaced at half time, set Baker free and he pulled the ball back for Hughes-Mason to finish emphatically.

Mott made another save from Noel before Welling added a third with the last kick of the first half.

Cumbers chased a long pass and McNamara was flattened by his own defender, leaving the Welling striker all the time he needed to slot the home.

There were fewer clear cut chances in the second half but VCD certainly weren’t overawed and passed the ball around in a manner which was very pleasing to the eye.

Three Welling substitutes combined as Ryan Flack’s cross was nodded back by Scott Kinch to allow Ross Lafayette a shooting opportunity that went just wide.

Noel had an effort that was deflected wide for a corner before Flack came close for Welling when he cut inside and hit an effort that clipped the far post.

John Main came on late in the second half and burst through before shooting just over the bar.

Joe Obersteller, playing his third pre-season game as a trialist, showed he is starting to settle in and a run down the wing and cross was almost finished in spectacular style as Lafayette attempted an audacious bicycle kick.
