STEVENAGE have entered the race to sign Welling United’s highly-rated skipper Jack Parkinson.

Parkinson hooked up with Southend United last week and played in two pre-season games for the Shrimpers.

The 21-year-old looked odds on to pen a deal with Paul Sturrock’s side but League One Stevenage made their interest clear to Wings boss Jamie Day at the weekend and invited the player in for training yesterday.

Parkinson said: “It went well.

“They called Jamie and told him they had been watching me and were interested.

“I was told after the training session by Stevenage manager Graham Westley he was definitely interested in making an offer, so I’m just waiting to see what happens now.

“I’m in a situation where I don’t know what is happening and it is a bit frustrating because I still want to do my best for Welling.”

One of the benefits of being a part-time player for the Wings for Parkinson is it allows him to run his own coaching business during the week, something which he confirmed would continue were he to move to a Football League club.

He added: “Southend and Stevenage both know I will be continuing with that and it isn’t an issue.

“I’ll still be living at home and can do both.”
