PUPILS at Sydenham School had a PE lesson with a difference recently after winning a London-wide competition.
Organised by the London Youth Games, schools in and around the capital entered to win a professional training session with Arsenal and England women’s football player Rachel Yankey.
Despite huge competition, Sydenham won the bid and Yankey popped in for a one-hour coaching session at the end of last month.
A total of 25 girls were selected by the PE department to attend the training session and represent the school.
One of the most positive aspects about the session was how it promoted the image of women in football.
All of the girls who took part mentioned they did not know much about women’s football because it is not on television very often.
They also said they wished there was more in the media, so they could follow and aspire to be like Yankey and other outstanding female footballers who are part of our nation’s favourite game.
