An 11th minute goal by Martin Tuohy sent Cray home empty-handed from their opening Ryman Premier League fixture at Hornchurch.
Cray's best efforts to hit back came soon afterwards from Laurent Hamici who saw one shot tipped over by Darren Bechet, and another hit the bar.
But it was the Urchins, and danger-man Tuohy in particular, who had the more chances after that, with the Wands finding it hard to open up the home defence.
A late chance went begging for Cray when the unmarked John Guest could only direct his header straight to the 'keeper.
Cray: King, Cotterill, Bentley, Day, Willy, Guest, Lanzano (Hammond), Perkins (White), Hamici, Phillips, Sterling. Subs not used: Coleman, McCann, Sawyer.
The wands are at home to Carshalton Athletic on Wednesday at 7.45pm.
An exhibition of Cray Wanderers' 150 years history will be held at Bromley Central Library as part of the 'Sport in Parks' exhibition from August 26 to September 8. Admission is free.
