MAKING light of their off the field problems and travelling difficulties Welling United visited pre-season bookies Havant and Waterlooville and returned home with a thoroughly deserved three points.

Captain Jack Parkinson had a great opportunity early on following good work by strikers Andy Pugh and Luis Cumbers but he delayed his shot and it was blocked for a corner.

Jamie Coyle was alert enough to head away a dangerous cross before Wes Fogden got on the end of a thrilling swift five man move but saw his effort saved by Charlie Mitten.

Coyle was then in action at the other end and a slightest touch would have been sufficient to divert Jack Obersteller’s free kick inside the far post.

Aaron Howe saved a Coyle long range shot before Ian Simpemba was lucky to escape censure for an ugly challenge on Cumbers.

Obersteller broke but shot wide before Havant made a glorious chance.

Sammy Igoe crossed from the right but Fogden failed to get his shot anywhere near the goal.

After good work by Pugh and Loui Fazakerley, Joe Healy gave Cumbers a chance to test Howe but the Hawks keeper was equal to the challenge.

Pugh had the first chance of the second half but saw his first time volley punched away in spectacular style by Howe.

Mustafa Tiriyaki thought he had scored but Andy Sambrook made a fantastic goal line clearance.

Graeme Andrews headed an Obersteller corner wide but Welling went ahead shortly afterwards.

Obersteller’s cross evaded Healy but Fazakerley arrived at the far side of the penalty area and his shot was good enough to beat a desperate defender on the goal line.

Four minutes later the scores were level.

Substitute Harvey Whyte was felled just inside the penalty area and although Mitten dived the right way Bobby Hopkinson’s shot was too accurate to be saved.

Cumbers and Pugh again combined to set up Parkinson but his effort was blocked away for a corner by Howe.

Parkinson enjoyed ‘third time lucky’ in the 80th minute when unmarked on the far post he headed home Obersteller’s deep corner.

Player manager Jamie Day ensured the points would be going back to Park View Road when his spectacular free kick curled right round the wall and found the back of the net.

The Wings could easily have recorded nine points out of nine and the management will hope for a good turnout on Tuesday night when Welling entertain Chelmsford City.

Welling United: Mitten, Coyle, Obersteller, Day, Andrews, Parkinson, Fazakerley, Sambrook, Cumbers (Whitnell 72), Pugh, Healy. Unused substitutes Omegbehin, Johnson, Billings.
