After an outstandingly successful pre-season campaign, Cray Wanderers are waiting to start the season proper next Saturday 21 August when their opening fixture in the Ryman Premier League takes them to AFC Hornchurch (3pm).

The Wands followed a midweek 3-1 win at Whyteleafe with a good 4-0 win at Chipstead on Saturday, as manager Ian Jenkins gave his newly-shaped squad a final look-over before the big kick-off in seven days time.

Cray have used the summer to stage some special footballing events to celebrate the club's 150th anniversary date in 2010.

Cray played a special invitation match against local rivals Crockenhill FC at St Mary Cray Recreation Ground on 3 July, and then travelled up north to play in a one-day tournament featuring Cray, Hallam and Sheffield, the three oldest football clubs.

Jenkins believes that those events, and also the well-attended matches versus Leyton Orient and the Guyana international side, have boosted the club's profile in Non-League football and have helped to bond together his squad of players that includes several new faces.

Last season in their first-ever experience of Ryman Premier football, the Wands finished fifteenth, but now with the extra spotlight on the club in its 150th anniversary season, Jenkins is looking for a much stronger campaign, and to have a good run in the FA Cup and FA Trophy too.
