CONTINUING the pattern of their previous two pre-season friendlies, Welling United again notched four goals in their game at Canvey Island.
Manager Jamie Day was absent but his management team of Barry Ashby, Dean Frost and Stacey Beckham organized a team that outplayed their opponents from a league below.
Jack Oberstellar was involved in most of Welling’s early attacks and after he had shot wide and then over his cross almost allowed Loui Fazakerley to head home at the far post.
After Jon Edwards had blasted over for Canvey, Andy Pugh’s wonderful cross found Joe Healy arriving late at the back pass but he was unable to keep his effort down. Pugh continued to cause problems for former Wings favourite Chris Moore and his fellow defenders and his turn and shot was just over.
Another Pugh effort was deflected wide by Ashley Dumas and from the resulting corner Jamie Coyle’s effort was flicked wide. Oberstellar then had a free kick tipped over by James Russell.
James Rowe gave Welling a warning when he pulled away from Daryl Robson but John Whitehouse saved easily.
On 40 minutes Canvey shocked their visitors by going ahead when Edwards’ cross was met by a powerful header from Danny Heale at the near post.
Moore thwarted his former club twice, first blocking a Jack Parkinson shot then tripping Tommy Whitnell on the edge of the penalty area.
Although a free kick was not awarded Welling equalised just before half time.
Having swapped wings with Fazakerley, Healy swung in a delicious cross from the right wing and Pugh headed home for his first pre season goal.
Two substitutes combined to put Welling ahead nineteen minutes into the second half when Loick Pires crossed to the far post for Luis Cumbers to chest down and fire home.
Fazakerley came close again when his header at the far post went just wide from a fine Ben Billings centre.
Cumbers notched again on 75 minutes chasing a long ball from Anthony Achempong and coolly lobbing Russell.
Two minutes later Welling scored again and this time Cumbers turned provider knocking down Fazakerley’s cross for Pires to finish.
Billings then shot against the post as Welling completed a comprehensive victory.
Welling United: Whitehouse, Coyle (Achempong 46), Oberstellar (Johnson 46), Robson, Andrews, Parkinson, Fazakerley, Clarke, Whitnell (Cumbers 55), Pugh (Billings 55), Healy (Pires 46).
