WELLING player-manager Jamie Day feels things are shaping up nicely for the big kick-off in August.

Speaking after the Wings’ annual friendly with neighbours Charlton last night, Day claimed he already has the right players in place to build on the momentum gained last season.

He said: “We have got the boys we wanted to sign.

“We did our homework last season and got them in early over the summer, so what’s here now is what we will be picking from for the rest of the season.”

In addition to the 11 players already signed up, an additional seven trialists have been attempting to play their way into the manager’s plans, with Day admitting a decision on their future has to be made soon.

“We don’t want it to drag on as it is not fair on them when they are looking for clubs,” he said.

“Most of the trialists will play on Friday against Aveley and then we will make a decision over the weekend on whether we can keep certain players.

“They have all done reasonably well but we will have to see what money we have left out of the budget and work from there.”

With a crowd of 2,080 at Park View Road last night, the clubs coffers will no doubt have been boosted.

And with friendlies against an Arsenal X1 and Millwall still to come at Park View Road, Day is hopeful many more will flock through the gates.

He said: “It’s pleasing that we got 2,000 in and if we can get that against Arsenal, as well as a decent crowd against Millwall, then hopefully it will give me a bit more to play with for the coming season.”

Having watched his side put in a spirited display against League One opposition last night, the manager heaped praise on his charges and urged them to kick on.

Day said: “I didn’t think we were too far off them ability wise and it was only in the last 15 minutes of each half that we tired.

“I thought the two centre halves did really well in the second half.

“Darren Marsden did well and the two wide players have done OK.”

He added: “I’ve said to the boys that we have kept a good bulk of players and it is now down to them.

“They did well last year and need to kick on and not rest on the five months that we were here.

“Hopefully we will hit the ground running but we do have a tough first month so we will wait and see.

“There’s another three or four weeks to go but if we can play like we did today, then I’ll be pleased.”
