BROMLEY boss Mark Goldberg was delighted with Nic McDonnell after the striker scored the opener in Saturday’s 2-1 friendly win over Gillingham.

McDonnell became a firm favourite with Lillies fans during his first spell at the club and Goldberg had no hesitation in snapping him up again this summer once the player became available again.

The manager told News Shopper: “In my meeting prior to pre-season, I had seen Nic McDonnell had adapted his shape for a return to football.

“He had lost weight and got fit over the summer and was eager to return.

“Nic has worked very hard over the last few weeks so I was very pleased to see him score the first goal against Gillingham and he did exactly what everyone at the club knows he can do.”

Substitute Joe Scarborough doubled Bromley’s advantage against the Gills and although happy to see his side beat Football League opposition, Goldberg is keeping both feet firmly on the ground.

He said: “I was very pleased with the win on Saturday against Gillingham as you go into every game, regardless of the competition, wanting to win it.

“However, the purpose of these pre-season games is to learn about the new players who have come into the squad and learn about certain combinations of players ahead of the new season.

“We had five or six new players within the squad on Saturday and we were pleased to play a few youngsters in our side to see if they could adapt quickly to men's football and I was pleased with their contribution.

“Looking back at the game, we feel that it ticked all of the boxes and we got everything that we asked for.”

Goldberg added: “I am looking forward to our next home games this week with Dagenham tonight and Millwall at Hayes Lane on Saturday as they will be good tests for our side.

“I am enjoying the pre-season campaign so far for a number of reasons and the pitch is looking fantastic thanks to the new sprinkler system.

“We have quite a few exciting friendlies coming up which will help us test ourselves against different types of opposition and there are a lot of lessons to be learned within the squad before we start the new league campaign.”
