THE Gravesend League retained the George Fooks Trophy after an exciting inter-league game with Sevenoaks last Wednesday.
Although the match ended in a draw, as holders the Gravesend League kept hold of the trophy.
The game was played on the ground of Otford United FC and it was Sevenoaks who opened the scoring on 15 minutes with a deflected shot.
Gravesend got into their stride and Dave Goodwin was unlucky to see his 20-yard free-kick come back off the bar.
They got their reward on the half hour when Damien Blowers scored from just inside the area.
Gravesend were really pressing now and the Johnny Depp lookalike in the Sevenoaks goal had to be on top form to stop the visitors from going in front.
Just before the interval, the pace of Blowers paid off when he outpaced the Sevenoaks defence to slot home and give Gravesend a deserved half-time lead.
Sevenoaks were level two minutes into the second half with a disputed goal.
A Gravesend player appeared to be fouled in the build-up to the strike but both the referee and assistant referee waived play on.
Both teams went for the win and Michael Elder in the Gravesend goal had an excellent game by making a couple of world class saves, as did his counterpart in the Sevenoaks goal.
At the enfinal whistle, Sevenoaks League general secretary Derek Hodge presented the trophy to the Gravesend captain Goodwin.
Gravesend team manager Peter Danzey said: “All of the Gravesend players had excellent games and it was a credit to them in the effort they put in after a long hard season.
“Iit was good to see players that were rivals for most of the season gel together as team mates on the night.”
