Welling United 0 v 7 Bromley
Kent Senior Cup Quarter-Final
IN BOXING terms this was Iron Mike Tyson against Pee Wee Herman. In biblical terms it was Goliath versus David's sister. In football terms, it was a unmitigating rout.
Welling of the Conference South made nine changes from the side which lost at Yeading at the weekend, fielding a young side of virutal unknowns.
Bromley, from the league beneath Welling, fielded their strongest available 11 and the gulf in strength, ability, determination and organisation was as wide as the Grand Canyon.
Within 15 minutes it was clear the hosts lightweight youngsters were going to struggle against Bromley's free-flowing frontline as Adrian Stone, Gary Drewett and Sam Wood missed early chances.
Welling stopper Darren Ibrahim was called into action on 18 minutes smothering Allan McLeod's drive but moments later he was beaten when Stone was first to react to Wood's low cross from the left to deftly deflect it into the net.
The lead was double two minutes later when Bromley skipper Mark Willy nodded Barry Gardner's corner home from close range following McLeod's neat flick-on.
Ibrahim had to be alert to deny McLeod from eight yards but he could do nothing when Drewett broke the offside trap to run one-on-one and fire his effort under the keeper's body for 3-0.
Any thoughts of a Liverpool-style Champions League final comeback was quashed when Ibrahim's loose clearance was headed into Stone's path by McLeod and the striker went on to lob the keeper from 20 yards.
In the Bromley goal life was very quiet for Mark Davidson as the only thing he had to do was save Pinnock's long-range and weak shot on 42 minutes.
Welling boss Adrian Pennock came on for the second to, one assumes, shore up the defence and may be salvage some pride for the home fans who had paid good money to watch their team.
However, within four minutes of the restart Bromley were five goals to the good when Ellis Remy's shot cannoned off Rowland to loop over Ibrahim into the empty net.
To the delight of the travelling fans Bromley were not finished and on 53 minutes Willy was left unmarked to head home another Gardner corner.
On 57 minutes it was seven when, having survived a hefty handball appeal, Gardner fired in a shot which was blocked before falling to Drewett who buried the ball from 20 yards.
By now Bromley had taken their foot off the gas and Welling began to discover life outside of their own half but they never looked like getting any sort of consolation.
Late on Bromley should have been eight and nine goals to the good when Wood found himself in space twice in quick succession but Ibrahim saved well on each occasion.
At the final whistle there were some positives for Welling as youngsters Rishi Nankani and Joe Cortney showed signs of ability.
For Bromley, they are in the last four of the Kent Senior Cup.
