IN front of Bishop’s Stortford’s lowest home league gate of the season, Bromley left Woodside Park empty handed after another lethargic performance on Tuesday evening.

Both teams were coming into the match on a run of seven successive games without a win, but once Stortford went ahead after just five minutes, Bromley never looked likely to retrieve the situation.

Goalkeeper Gareth Williams had a game he will wish to forget as his blunders presented the home side with the opening two goals.

The first when he failed to hold a routine 20-yard shot from ex-Bromley loanee Jacob Erskine and the loose ball ran to Scott Shulton, who promptly despatched it to the far corner of the net.

Stortford’s second came four minutes into the second half when Wliiams allowed a Shulton 30-yard free-kick to squirm through his hands.

In between, Williams did well to tip over a 25-yard blockbuster from Emmanuel Sackey in the 13th minute.

A goalbound half volley from Richard Butler on 20 minutes was deflected wide by a Stortford defender following a quick break and cross from Steve Ferguson.

Williams dropped the ball after a goalmouth scramble on 35 minutes, but Aaron Fray saved the keeper’s blushes by clearing Max Lette-Jallow’s shot off the line.

The last action of the first 45 minutes saw Williams do well to tip Erskine’s fiercely struck free-kick over the bar.

Two minutes after the home side had increased their lead, the best move of the evening saw Butler side foot wide from six yards after Mark Corneille and Steve Ferguson had combined well to split the Stortford defence.

Ferguson’s 53rd minute cross was put over the bar by substitute Warren McBean from five yards as the visitors enjoyed their best period of the match.

Bromley fell further behind on 70 minutes with another gift wrapped goal.

Ashley Carew, on for the out of sorts Luke I’Anson, gave a sloppy pass to the opposition on the halfway.

This was quickly switched to the other side of the pitch where substitute Nick Moir crossed for the unmarked Lette-Jallow to rise and head past the exposed Williams.

Ferguson was unlucky on 77 minutes when he rounded four defenders only to shoot into the side netting.

A great through ball by Carew picked out McBean three minutes later, but the striker was slow to react and he could only knock the ball against the keeper’s legs.

Butler hit a shot on the turn just wide after being put in by Ryan Hall in the closing minutes, but Bromley finished a well beaten side as Bishop’s Stortford recorded their highest home victory of the season to ease their relegation fears.
