BROMLEY returned from Dorset on Saturday with a share of the spoils in a scoreless draw at the Jewson Stadium.
But they were rather fortunate to survive a battering in the last quarter of an hour as the hosts extended their unbeaten run to five games under caretaker manager Ashley Vickers.
The visitors were on the back foot from the off.
In the second minute, Gareth Williams did well to parry Kevin Hill’s close range header before Harrison Dunk cleared off the line from Jules Emati-Emati’s follow-up.
Lillies keeper Williams punched clear a dangerous looking cross from Steve Devlin one minute later.
Dorchester keeper Regan Coward dived full-length to deny Ashley Carew’s effort from the edge of the area in Bromley’s first attack of any consequence. Williams denied a Devlin free-kick and then was first to the ball as Sam Charles broke clear.
The best chance of the half fell to Jerrome Sobers. A deep free-kick was only cleared as far as Sobers and, with the keeper stranded out of his goal, Sobers fired wide of a gaping net and wide of the post.
Warren McBean was unlucky in the 34th minute when, with back to goal, he turned and shot in one movement, only for the effort to drift past a post.
Williams reacted quickly two minutes later to tip over Charles’s header, and from the resultant corner, the Bromley keeper did well to divert the ball away from Devlin’s head.
As the half closed Jamie Gleeson fired over and Nicky Greene cleared off the line after Williams had been beaten by a Charles looped header.
The second period was a drab affair as the soft pitch cut up rather badly, making ball control rather difficult.
In fact, 18 minutes passed before any goalmouth action took place when Dorchester’s Neil Martin headed wide from Ryan Hill’s deep cross to the far post.
The introduction of Phil Ruggles on 70 minutes added some much-needed energy to Bromley’s front line, but unfortunately it did not have the desired effect as Ryan Hall chested down his pass to volley over the bar from 25 yards.
A poor headed clearance by Sobers fell to Nick Crittenden, whose firm low drive came back off the woodwork.
Williams failed to hold a cross from a corner and, following an almighty scramble, the danger was eventually cleared.
Nathan Walker’s header and a Devlin corner were both cleared off the line before Ryan Dolby brilliantly blocked Crittenden just as he was about to shoot for goal.
McBean could have won it for Bromley with two minutes remaining, as he fastened onto a Rob Gillman clearance to beat the offside trap, only to scoop his shot past the post when he only had Coward to beat.
But it would have been a complete injustice had he scored and Bromley were probably relieved to return home with a point in the bag.
