Welling United’s undefeated pre-season continued with a 2-0 victory over Football League club Gillingham.

Second-half goals by Sanchez Ming and Jake Hobbs ensured Welling claimed the victory in a game which saw 20 players take the field for Wings.

Both goalkeepers were tested in the first-half, with Charlie Mitten making a couple of fine saves for the hosts to foil Adam Miller and Jordon Parkes. At the other end of the field, Simon Royce tipped over shots from the impressive Dean Cracknell and debutant James Lawson.

Lee Clarke and Loui Fazackerly created chances for Welling but Clarke shot wide and Fazackerly blasted high following outstanding work by Michael Dean, who was looking to catch they eye of the Wings manager.

Andy Ford’s five changes to his team at half-time seemed to do the trick when the hosts went ahead in the 64th minute. Tony Finn’s swerving shot was fumbled by Royce and and Ming was quickest to the loose ball stroking it into the net while the Gillingham defenders watched.

Teenager Ben Greenhauge threatened to double the lead when broke away down the left flank but his cross was just too high for Lawson.

But in the 83rd minute, Welling made the game safe when triallist Jake Hobbs sprang the Gillingham offside trap and shot confidently past Royce.

The Wings make the short journey to Dartford on Tuesday night with Andy Ford still to decide on his squad for the new season.
