Bromley returned home from Somerset on Saturday afternoon with a hard earned three points against basement team, Weston-Super-Mare, to maintain second place in the league table.
However, it might have been a different story on another day, as Weston pinned Bromley back in their own half for long periods but lacked the final ball where it mattered.
The hosts started brightly forcing two early corners, before Dayle Grubb forced Bromley’s goalkeeper, Seb Brown, to punch away a fierce drive; while Jason Cane fired narrowly wide from a central position moments later.
The vital breakthrough came in the 18th minute in Bromley’s first meaningful attack. Damian Scannell did well to dispossess Tom Jordan to advance and beat goalkeeper, Luke Purnell, into the far corner.
Two minutes later it might have been two, when Moses Ademola’s bullet-like header flew just the wrong side of the upright, before the striker’s 25-yarder was tipped over by Purnell.
The visitors were again on the back foot with the hosts forcing several corners, all to no avail, but Brown did hold a well-directed shot from Alec Fiddes underneath the crossbar.
Weston nearly levelled the scores six minutes into the second half. With Brown off his line, Joe McClennan lobbed towards an open goal, but the goalkeeper just managed to recover to divert the ball for a corner.
Louis Dennis Saw his snap-shot go just wide, and Danny Waldren’s downward header from Dennis’s corner was saved at the second attempt by Purnell.
Grubb wasted a good chance for the home side by shooting wide when well placed.
Purnell saved well from Jamie Slabber and Waldren in quick succession, as Bromley looked to close the game out but Weston would not lie down, and came back strongly in the closing stages of the game.
Kane Ingram’s volley went high and wide, before McClennan’s rasping cross-shot glanced off the crossbar. The hosts nearly snatched a point in added time, only to be denied by Brown who made a great double save. Firstly blocking Grubb’s close range effort, and recovering quickly to block Cane’s follow up shot of the loose ball.
Bromley: Brown, Udoji, Anderson, Prestedge, Swaine, Holland, Scannell, Waldren, Slabber, Ademola, Dennis.
Subs not used; McNaughton, Rodgers, Birchall, Robertson.
